Would like to quote Socrates -

"He thought that human beings are psychological beings and that the soul can be improved or be made worse. Human beings, as psychological beings, do what they do because of the states and processes in their souls. In this way, the quality of one's life is tied to the health of one's soul. If the soul is unhealthy, and so functions poorly, then the individual makes poor choices in life. On the Socratic conception, proper psychological functioning constitutes rationality in human beings. Most human beings, however, are not rational. Their souls are not functioning properly. They are confused. Socrates thought that the love of wisdom was the remedy. He thought that human beings should care for their souls by engaging in the love of wisdom. In saying that the soul requires "care" and that this care consists in the love of wisdom, Socrates is saying that his "testing" and "examining" helps those with whom he comes in contact to have healthy souls and thus to be rational. In this case, Socrates is a great benefit to the citizens of Athens, just as he claims. He helps them make good choices and so make their lives good."
