1951–52

The general election of India was done in 1951–52 when country elected its first Lok Sabha. Until this point, the Indian Constituent Assembly had served as an interim legislature.

  1. Election was started on 25 October 1951 finished on 21 February 1952.
  2. Total number of seats which gone for polling was 489.
  3. Indian National Congress (INC) won won 364 of the 489 seats and 45% of the total votes polled.
  4. Jawaharlal Nehru became the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the country.
  5. Country had 173 million voters out of which 45.7% exercised their right to vote.
