SEO: Accuracy of backlinks on different sites?

Why when I check my # of backlinks on different sites do I get such a WIDE variety? What is most accurate?

Here are the best backlink checker tools ie. I will tell you now Ahref's is a personal favorite of mine. They show some fantastic data and break it down in pretty much every way imaginable.
I really don’t like how Majestic SEO present their data it really does leave a lot to be desired. However, when you drill down into the data it does provide everything you need to know.
