Ubuntu: How do I clean up the Software Update cache?

I had a couple *.iso disks in my CD/DVD drive recently. I had looked at the images, but did not install. Now, i have a software update prompt and when I go to install, I am asked to put the two iso's in the drive. If I cancel the request and try to continue with the updates, it fails to complete them.

My google efforts have failed to produce a solution to the problem. How do I clean this up so that I can get back to regular updates?

Probably fixable to becoming root and editing /etc/apt/sources.list to remove the local optical drive line entirely. Or you can put a # sign as the first character, which I believe does the same thing.

I am trying to figure out how to get my sever to come back up to operation on a power failure. Right now it comes up and gives me three choices. I don't want the bloody choices I just want it to straight reboot so can run it headless!

How to clear DNS cache?

My system is set to go directly to the OpenDNS name servers for DNS resolution. However, the results I get from "nslookup" differ from what I get if I query the same name server from another machine with the same resolv.conf settings.

That leads me to believe that DNS info is being cached locally somewhere. I don't have bind or nscd installed.

Where is this caching taking place and how can I clear/flush it?

How do I find the location of a file that starts a program at boot time on Ubuntu?

I installed the NUT monitor from the Ubunut Software Center. The Ubuntu Software Center lists version 2.6.4-2.3ubuntu2 but when I look at the NUT Monitor ABOUT the program has version 1.3!

I am replacing an old computer running OS/2 as a file and print server for my home LAN with a new computer running Ubuntu. I moved the UPS serial connection from the old computer to the new one but am having problems getting UPS logging to work. When I boot the computer UPSLOG starts but is not finding the UPS so the log is full of useless data. How do I find which file starts the UPSLOG?

As a side problem it appears that the UPSLOG does not operate as the documentation describes. I added a file for the logrotate program which does rotate the log but other than that does not appear to work. When the logrotate program runs the logger stops when it gets the "kill -HUP" signal instead of continuing with the new log file.

I have read the readme file but there is not much about installation. I have looked at some documentation on the internet trying to get this installed but the documentation does not match the configuration files I have on my system. Anyone know where I can find documentation that matches the version I have?
