virtual disk versus host access

I have mainly on my server around 200 Gb data and expanding. I would like to use for now on a virtual server (my new server will have VT, 16Gb ram, 2x1To raid disk)

I wonder what is safer, to use a for example 500Gb virtual disk for data or use a dedicated 500Gb partition accessed through virtual network or shared folder.

I wonder this because of the updates (and then distro upgrade) that could brake the shares. I use openSUSE, 12.3 for now and then 13.1 when available

I don't personally see either approach as "safer" than the other, the only difference would be the ease of backing up data and moving it around (ie copying a .vdi file to an external drive for off-site backup).

Oracle Virtual box is heavy option for me to launch virtual machines. I am looking for a lite weight hypervisor option or any other solutions which make my life easy.

I am using Virtualbox on a Windows 10 host system, a Fedora 25 guest system, and with guest additions.

I recently had a Windows 10 automatic update and this problem did not seem to occur before that. I have tried to uninstall the updates, but I think some of the changes are left behind.

The crash seems to happen while I am accessing the internet on the host system and working in the guest system.

The blue screen of death has the following error type in it SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Has anyone else been experiencing this ?

I've been trying to setup Host-only networking between my eCS guest and Mac OSx Host. I already have a bridged network for internet access, but wanted to access the host file system from the guest. In reading the docs I thought this might work, but I don't seem to get any connection. I'm thinking that I don't understand what I'm doing enough to set it up correctly. I setup a second adapter in the guest and assigned a fixed IP address. I assigned the Host-Only adapter in VBox and it assigned it an IP address. Is that the IP that I need to connect to from the guest? The docs say that the host should show a new adapter in it's networking setup, but I don't see any new adapter in the list. Has anyone gotten this to work?

I have a ubuntu 16.04 running on a remote server, for which I have a fixed address assigned by the provider. On this machine I have a virtual box virtual server running with a static address of 192.168.0.104

How do I add a gateway to access this address. it needs to be accessible only on the remote server. not from the internet.

I am running WinXP running in Virtual Box. I have Norton 360 running in Win 7. If I go on line with XP in Virtual Box will Norton 360 in the host, Win 7, protect me from viruses downloaded in XP (in Virtual Box)?

If not, what must I do to protect downloads in XP? Install a separate antivirus program in virtual XP?
