Arts was part of the Games programme from 1912 until discontinued after the 1948 Games. It included five categories (architecture including town planning, literature, music, painting, and sculpture), for works inspired by sport-related themes. After 1948, concerns about logistics and professional vs amateur put a stop to the practice but in 1952 a continuing tradition of an art festival and exhibition concurrent with the Summer Games was established.
