White Night riots
A peaceful march through the Castro district of San Francisco turned violent when it arrived at City Hall, where hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of property damage was done, as well as injuries to police officers and rioters. Several hours later, police made a retaliatory raid on a gay bar in San Francisco's Castro District: patrons were beaten by police in riot gear, and 24 arrests were made. Subsequently, Mayor Dianne Feinstein was re-elected and appointed a pro-gay Chief of Police, which increased recruitment of gays in the police force.
