In ancient flowering plants
Where a plant's flowers have petals they are protected by sepals, but in ancient flowering plants (as well as some more recent ones) the petal and the sepal are not differentiated, and are termed a "tepal". Magnolias are an example of older plants of this kind. More recent examples include hellebore, Christmas bells, tulips and yellow autumn crocus.
