In 2018, the "Chicken Tax" on light trucks remained in effect, having protected U.S. domestic automakers from foreign light truck production and reduced pressure on Detroit to introduce vehicles that polluted less or offered increased fuel economy. Various countries and companies increasingly circumvent the tax.
