A piece of music
A passacaglia, originating in early seventeenth-century Spain as an interlude between instrumentally accompanied dances or songs, is usually sombre, written in triple metre, and is often a series of continuous variations over a bass; the chaconne was popular in the baroque era and often used as a vehicle for melodic invention and variation.
