A moratorium on capital punishment throughout the US
The decision mandated a degree of consistency in the application of the death penalty, and in a 5–4 decision invalidated all death penalty schemes in the US. Following the decision, in order to reinstate the death penalty, such states as still included the death penalty had to remove any arbitrary and discriminatory effects to satisfy the Eighth Amendment to the US Constitution. The moratorium ended in 1976. The other options are all landmark Supreme Court decisions: abortion was Roe v. Wade 1973, contraception was Eisenstadt v. Baird 1972, freedom of the press was New York Times Co. v. United States 1971.
