English
The golfer was Horace Rawlins playing in the inaugural Championship at Newport, Rhode Island. From 1895, when the first US Open was held, until 1911, when the first American won, the winning golfers were: Scottish (8), English (3), and Jersey (1). One Scottish golfer, Alex Smith, won the Championship twice and another, Willie Anderson, won it 4 times.
