1956-62, in Algeria
Harki was the name given to Muslim troops native to Algeria, recruited by the French Army to fight against the Algerian National Liberation Front during the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62). Many of the recruits were descendants of men who had also fought in the French army in the World Wars. The Harkis were recruited initially as an irregular self-defence force in their communities, then to fight as part of the Army. Following Algeria's declaration of independence in 1962 France disarmed the Harkis and withdrew, leaving them behind to face the revenges of the now successful mujahideen.
