The 95 Theses
The title under which Luther enclosed the treatise in his letter to his Bishop was "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences". Instead of scholarly disputation on the sale of indulgences within the Church the situation blew up into threat of excommunication and eventual trial for heresy before Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, at a Diet in Worms, Germany, in 1521.
