1 August, or the first Monday in August
This was the date in 1834 on which the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 in the UK, which abolished slavery throughout the British Empire came into effect. There were exceptions to the Act - "of the Territories in the Possession of the East India Company", the "Island of Ceylon" and "the Island of Saint Helena"; the exceptions were eliminated ten years later, in 1843.
