Sakura refers to a group of species called the Ornamental Cherry trees. The most popular one in Japan is Prunus yedoensis , which is admired for its blossoms in spring. There are other species like Prunus sargentii and higan (spring) cherry (P. subhirtella) and many named hybrids between the different species.
