Use of Guard period between two symbols is to optimize inter symbol interference which can occur due to propagation delay.Hence, it helps in reducing bit error rate(BER)

For the pre-paid customers, sometime operators grant some extra time units (seconds/minutes) even a subscriber is running out of balance. Though I tagged my question to LTE only but this is a very common use case for pre-paid customers. Each operator may have different policy for each user or a common policy for all the subscribers. I am looking for some insights in this area.
