SDN Controller: How should I decide to use a particular sdn controller ?

I am very new to this technology so thought to ask query in this forum. There are multiple SDN controllers available but I have to use one for my project. On what basis, a particular SDN controller is selected. What parameters/features are considered while selecting a controller ?
