Thinking in reverse order, in last shop he must have $2 left with him, then proceeding backwards:

let's assume he had $X when he went to 2nd last shop, then eqn. will be:

X - (X/2+1) = 2 ==> X = 6,

Similarily,

X - (X/2+1) = 6 ==> X = 14,

X - (X/2+1) = 14 ==> X = 30,

X - (X/2+1) = 6 ==> X = 62,
