A boy was in detention from talking too much when the teacher was talking.
The detention teacher said, "You have to produce a 1000 word essay in 30 seconds...GO!!" The boy actually did it. How?

Note: He did not just write "A 1000 word essay" on his paper.
You'll have to be a little more clever than that.

Take number 1000 and then add 20 to it.
Now add 1000 one more time.
Now add 30.
Now add 1000 one more time.
Now add 40.
Now add 1000 one more time.
Now add 10.

What is the total?

Garima takes the underground train to work and uses an escalator at the railway station. If Garima runs up 8 steps of the escalator, then it takes her 30.0 seconds to reach the top of the escalator. If she runs up 15 steps of the escalator, then it takes her only 12.5 seconds to reach the top.

How many seconds would it take Garima to reach the top if she did not run up any steps of the escalator at all?

Johnny, despite his mother's objections, spent his whole allowance of $2.16 ($2.00, with 16 cents left from last week) on bubble gum. If the pieces of gum had been a penny cheaper, he would have received three more pieces than he did.
