Fans in the stands chanted racial abuse and/or spat at players
The AC Milan-Roma match was suspended briefly after chants of racist abuse by Roma fans; the Haringey Borough-Yeovil Town match was called off when fans in the stands abused and spat at the Cameroonian goalkeeper; the MSV Duisburg-VfL Osnabrück match was called off when racial abuse from the stands was directed at one of the players. Racial abuse had been a feature of some top-level professional matches, and the response of officials and the teams was been increasingly to stop play.
