Who first identified and isolated nucleic acids, the precursor to identifying DNA?

Friedrich Miescher
In 1869 Miescher isolated nucleic acids from the nuclei of white blood cells. He did not immediately follow the discovery up, and Albrecht Kossel later made enquiries into their chemical structure.
