What is unusual about the skeletons of sharks, skates and rays?

They have no bones
Their skeletons are made from cartilage and connective tissue, which is flexible and durable, and is about half the density of bone. This reduces weight, saving energy. A shark has no rib cage and therefore on land it can be crushed by its own weight.
