Menai Strait, Wales
The bridge was designed as part of the route from London to Holyhead in Anglesey, Wales, which in turn was a departing point for Ireland. The road and the bridge were the responsibility of the civil engineer Thomas Telford. He designed the bridge, which opened in January 1826 and considerably eased trade as well as travel throughout the route and between the countries.
