What name is given to a dam constructed from concrete and/or stone masonry and designed to hold back the water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation?

Gravity
Gravity dams are designed so that each section of the dam is stable and independent of any other dam section. Masonry was used in many early gravity dams, as far back as the 17th century. Concrete became more common from about 1900.
