Collect recycled consumer electronics to provide the metal from which the medals were made
A total of 78,985 tons of used mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras and hand-held games were collected from which 30.3 kg of gold, 4,100 kg of silver and 2,700 kg of bronze were extracted. Using recycled metal was an element of previous Games, but the scale of the Tokyo project was unprecedented.
