Bobsled
The medal was established in 1964 to honour athletes who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in Olympic events or those who give exceptional service to the Olympic movement. Monti helped one of his competitors in both the two-man and four-man bobsled team competitions to repair or replace missing equipment, enabling them to compete at all; the competitors won the gold. Monti and his teams won the gold in the following Winter Olympics. The Pierre de Coubertin Medal is currently awarded by the International Olympic Committee to pay tribute "to institutions with a pedagogical and educational role and to people who, through their research and the creation of intellectual works in the spirit of Pierre de Coubertin, contribute to the promotion of Olympism", the fair play aspect being honoured instead by one of three World Fair Play Trophies.
