A shawl
The shawl is worn by male Jews, in daily life but specifically for prayer. Its use and form is prescribed in the Torah. Traditionally it is rectangular, made of wool or linen, white, often with black or blue stripes, and with strings and fringes on each corner. The strings and knots are a physical representation of the Torah's 613 mitzvahs. In rabbinic law, women are not required to wear a tallit and in several Jewish communities they are barred from doing so.
