12th century
"The Anarchy" or "The Nineteen-Year Winter" refers to the period of English history during the reign of King Stephen (1135–1154). The reign was characterised by a continuing war with the Empress Matilda, daughter of the preceding king, Henry I , who claimed the right to the throne. Stephen was succeeded by the Empress's son, Henry II.
