India
The film is based on the life of Mohandas Gandhi who led the successful campaign in the 1940s for India's independence from British rule. It was directed and produced by Richard Attenborough, starred Ben Kingsley and was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning eight (more than any other film nominated that year), including for the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
