The "civilised" West, and African natives
The book talks of Western colonialism as a phenomenon that tarnishes not only the lands and peoples it exploits but also those in the West who advance it. The Congo Free State was the geographical heart of dark Africa, for Conrad the colonialists reflected London, the political heart of darkness in Britain.
