A flame and a virtually immediate explosion
Sodium is highly reactive, and dropping it into water creates an immediate reaction to form caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and flammable hydrogen gas. A less noticeable reaction, because it happens so briefly, is that the sodium erupts spikes before the explosion.
