In part of Austria now a part of the Czech Republic
Mendel was serving in the Augustinian St Thomas's Abbey in Brno at the time. Mendel began with mice, until his bishop forbade experiments involving animal sexuality, then proceeded with plants including hawkweed as well as pea plants, and bees. His work included studying astronomy and meteorology. He founded the 'Austrian Meteorological Society'; the majority of his published works relate to meteorology.
