Earthquake
In combination with subsequent fires and a tsunami, the 1755 earthquake almost totally destroyed Lisbon and adjoining areas. The 1531 earthquake and subsequent tsunami resulted in approximately 30,000 deaths and destruction of many of the city buildings.
