The Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia
The ground soil is typically clay and quartz-rich but nutrient-poor dry white sand. It is thought that the sand forests are fragments of ancient coastal dunes which were separated from the ocean over millions of years. Some vegetation in the forests is specialised to that environment, especially those with similar structure or limitations on the amounts of available resources, such as seasonally flooded blackwater forests and disturbed open habitats.
