A terrorist attack
Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer were killed during a massacre in which five Black September Palestinian terrorists also died. Eight members of Black September had broken into the Olympic Village and taken nine Israeli athletes, coaches and officials hostage, after killing two others; during a subsequent rescue attempt the remaining hostages were also killed together with five of the kidnappers and a West German police officer. The other options in the question also describe happenings at Summer Olympics, but either before or after 1972.
