1927
The inaugural tournament was organised by Joe Davis and Bill Camkin and held at various venues throughout the season. It was named the Professional Snooker Championship for its first years but adopted the name of World Championship in 1935. Disputes between various Associations and Council in billiards overshadowed championship competition in the sport, until the World Championship was again held in 1964.
