George III
George III found the principal royal residence of the time, St James's Palace (still, in the 21st century, the formal base of the Royal Court) which had been partly destroyed by fire, did not suit. In 1762 he bought Buckingham House and from then it became the day-to-day preference. Queen Victoria formalised its status as principal royal residence in 1837.
