Louisiana
In 1872, there was an attempt to impeach the governor, Henry Clay Warmoth. The law required him to stand down until convicted or cleared. Pinchback, as lieutenant governor, became governor and served for 35 days to the end of Warmoth's term. (Warmoth was not convicted and the charges were dropped.)
