Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby resigned as Prime Minister in 1868 for health reasons. Disraeli succeeded him as leader of the Conservative Party and therefore Prime Minister, and dissolved Parliament as the Conservatives did not have a majority. He and the Conservative Party won the election of 1874.
