SMS Scharnhorst
The defeat of the armoured cruiser Scharnhorst and its small fleet by a British force of 8 armed cruisers followed soon after the fleet, under its Vice-Admiral Graf von Spee, (in November about three months after Britain declared war on Germany in World War I) had soundly defeated four British ships at Coronel on the coast of Chile. The Monmouth was one of the British ships sunk at the Battle of Coronel . The other two craft were sunk in the 1982 battles between Britain and Argentina round and on the same islands.
