A fungus growing in rye, sometimes wheat and barley, and other grasses
The small long black fungus grows in the plants' ovaries. Ergot alkaloids when ergot-affected grain or grass is eaten can sometimes severely affect circulation and neurotransmission. During the Middle Ages, ergotism was common and was known as St. Anthony's fire.
