Saint Kitts and Nevis is one of the nine Commonwealth countries in and around the Caribbean and the West Indies. The country achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on 19 September 1983, although remaining with the British Commonwealth and retaining the British monarch as their head of state; it is one of the smallest sovereign states in the world, at 261 sq.km (101 sq. mi)
