A kind of bird
Ratites is the collective name for the flightless ostrich, emu, rhea, cassowary, kiwi and the extinct moa and elephant bird. A ratite is any bird whose sternum (breastbone) is smooth, or raftlike, because it lacks a keel to which flight muscles could be anchored.
