A peasant tied to an area of land, to a manor, or to the lord of a manor
A villein could regain his freedom of movement under some conditions, but otherwise was tied for life. While they remained they were entitled to protection, to access to land which they could rent and to sustenance from it, and to own a certain amount of property.
