Pakistan gained independence from the British Raj in 1947, the southern port area of Karachi was its first national capital. Islamabad officially became the capital of Pakistan on 14 August 1967, exactly 20 years after the country's independence from the British.
Previously, Rawalpindi was the capital starting from 1958. The first capital of Pakistan was the coastal city of Karachi, which was selected by Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
